Position Details: Legal Intern

The OPFA is seeking four Legal Interns for the 2026 intake. These positions are offered on a contract basis for a duration of 24 months. While the salary is described as market-related, the real value lies in the extensive training and exposure provided. The internship is situated in Pretoria, Gauteng, offering a chance to work within a key governmental regulatory body.

Minimum Requirements and Added Advantages

To be considered for the Legal Intern position, applicants must possess an LLB Degree. This is the fundamental educational qualification required. Beyond this, certain additional qualifications can significantly strengthen an application. A Certificate in Pension Funds Law would be highly beneficial, demonstrating a specific interest and foundational knowledge in the area. Furthermore, having completed Practical Legal Training would also be seen as an advantage, indicating readiness for legal practice.

Key Responsibilities of a Legal Intern

Successful candidates will be involved in a variety of tasks that are central to the OPFA’s function. A primary duty will be attending to walk-in pension fund complaints, which involves initial assessment and guidance. Interns will also assist in lodging new complaints and drafting necessary correspondence to all parties involved in a dispute. A significant part of the role will include conducting investigations into these complaints, requiring careful examination of evidence and relevant laws.

Further responsibilities include drafting determinations, which are the formal decisions made by the Adjudicator. Maintaining accurate complaint files and records is essential for the smooth operation of the unit. Interns will also follow up on responses and undertakings from parties and request investigation reports when needed. The role also involves saving all relevant responses and documents within the Respond software system and submitting weekly and monthly statistics to team leaders, ensuring data is up-to-date and accessible.

To excel in this role, interns will need a strong set of skills. Computer literacy, including proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook, is a must for daily tasks. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are vital for drafting documents and interacting with complainants and stakeholders. Strong planning and organizational abilities will help manage a caseload effectively.

Analytical and problem-solving skills are crucial for dissecting complex complaints and finding appropriate resolutions. The ability to investigate and resolve complaints thoroughly is at the core of the intern’s function. Candidates should also demonstrate resilience and professionalism, especially when dealing with sensitive matters. Finally, solid legal interpretation and argument skills are necessary for understanding and applying pension fund legislation.
