Gates Cambridge is a postgraduate scholarship associated with the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. It is not a Canadian scholarship or a general undergraduate award. Candidates should first identify a Cambridge postgraduate course and then check whether that course and their circumstances fit the current scholarship rules.
Start with the course, then the funding
Funding cannot make an unsuitable course a good academic match. Compare the course’s entry requirements, research focus, assessment methods and intended outcomes with your background. Explain a specific reason for choosing Cambridge: a research question, relevant academic expertise or a course feature connected to your plans. A generic statement praising the university gives selectors little evidence of fit.
Consult Cambridge’s Gates Cambridge scholarship information and the course’s official admissions page. Scholarship eligibility includes applicants from outside the UK, but that does not mean every course or applicant automatically qualifies.
Prepare two connected applications
Your admission materials demonstrate readiness for postgraduate study. Your funding materials should also explain why supporting your work matters. In the funding section of the Cambridge application, follow the Gates Cambridge instructions for its statement and additional reference. Ask referees early and share your course choice, achievements and goals so they can write a specific assessment.
Build a document checklist
- Check Cambridge’s supporting-document guidance and your chosen course’s requirements.
- Prepare an accurate academic history and readable transcripts. Follow the university’s rules for translated documents.
- Make your CV selective: relevant responsibilities and results are stronger than a long list without context.
- For research programmes, develop the proposal required by the course and scholarship instructions. Explain the problem, approach and feasibility.
- Check the course’s English-language requirements separately. Scholarship interest does not remove an admissions language condition.
Make the statement specific
Use an example of a responsibility you actually held. Describe the problem, your role, the action you took and the result. If you discuss public benefit, explain who would benefit and how your proposed work connects to their needs. Distinguish what you have already achieved from what you hope to do. Do not invent leadership positions, impact figures or hardship stories.
Check the correct deadline
Application timing can depend on the applicant group and course. Copy the deadline from the current official instructions for your own application rather than borrowing a date from another department or an older scholarship listing. Keep a schedule for references and required documents as well as the final submission date.
After submission
Monitor the applicant portal and official correspondence. Selection remains competitive, so consider other eligible Cambridge funding options and the costs you would face without this award. Before accepting an offer, check the written funding terms and any course conditions. Apply through the university’s process rather than an intermediary selling a guaranteed scholarship.
