Applicants can pursue qualifications in areas such as Actuarial Science, Built Environment (including Architecture, Construction, Urban and Regional Planning, and Quantity Surveying), Commerce, Community Services, and Emergency Management Services.

Engineering is fully supported, encompassing all fields like Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, and Industrial Engineering. Health sciences, Finance (including Accounting, Auditing, Economics, and Risk Management), and Information Technology and Management are also covered.

Additionally, the bursary extends to Humanities and Social Sciences, International Relations and Protocol, Legal Studies, Logistics, Marketing, Municipal Governance, Real Estate (Property Management and Valuation), Geo Information Science, and Business Management.

What Does the City of Johannesburg Bursary Cover?

Successful applicants can receive financial assistance towards their studies. The bursary may cover tuition fees, registration fees, prescribed books, and study materials. The maximum bursary allocation is R40,000 per academic year.

It is important for applicants to be aware that the bursary circular does not automatically include coverage for accommodation, meals, transport, or monthly living allowances. Applicants should plan accordingly for these expenses.

Who Can Apply?

To be eligible for the City of Johannesburg Bursary Programme, applicants must meet specific criteria. They must be South African citizens and youth who permanently reside within Johannesburg. The intended study must be full-time undergraduate and at an accredited South African tertiary institution.

Important: Apply for University or College Admission Separately

Applicants must apply directly to their preferred tertiary institution and secure admission separately. It is advisable to complete both the institution application and the bursary application process.

Documents Required

Applicants need to prepare certified copies of several supporting documents for their application. These include the most recent academic record, a certified copy of their South African identity document, and proof of permanent residence in Johannesburg, such as a Water and Lights or Rates and Taxes statement.

Parents’ proof of income is also required. If applicable, a death certificate for a deceased parent or an affidavit if the applicant does not have one or both parents must be provided. Applicants should ensure all uploaded documents are clear, complete, and readable.
