The Tsolo Agriculture and Rural Development Institute (TARDI), in collaboration with TETA, is offering an exciting opportunity for unemployed youth to enter the skilled trades. The Occupational Certificate: Diesel Mechanic Apprenticeship Programme is designed to equip participants with essential technical skills, addressing a national need for qualified artisans. This 36-month program aims to provide a clear pathway to sustainable employment for young South Africans passionate about mechanical engineering and heavy equipment.

About the Diesel Mechanic Apprenticeship Programme

This apprenticeship is more than just training; it’s a structured development initiative. It focuses on building scarce technical skills within South Africa’s workforce. Participants will gain hands-on experience and theoretical knowledge, preparing them for a career as a diesel mechanic. The program is open to individuals who are eager to learn, possess a strong mechanical aptitude, and are committed to completing the full duration of the course.

Programme Details

The Diesel Mechanic Apprenticeship Programme is an Occupational Certificate at NQF Level 4, carrying 544 credits. The total duration of the program is 36 months, and it aims to train 25 apprentices. Successful applicants will receive a monthly stipend of R3,000 throughout the program. This financial support helps apprentices focus on their training and development without undue financial stress.

Training Structure

The apprenticeship is divided into three distinct phases to ensure comprehensive skill development.

Phase 1: Institutional Training

The first six months involve intensive theoretical and practical training at an accredited institution. This phase lays the foundation for understanding diesel engine mechanics, systems, and diagnostic procedures. Apprentices will learn in a controlled environment, ensuring they grasp the core principles before moving to practical application.

Phase 2: Workplace Experiential Training

Following the initial institutional phase, apprentices will spend 24 months gaining practical experience in a real-world work setting. This hands-on component is critical for applying learned knowledge, developing problem-solving skills, and understanding the demands of the profession. Working alongside experienced mechanics will provide invaluable insights and mentorship.

Phase 3: Trade Test Preparation and Assessment

The final six months are dedicated to preparing apprentices for their trade test. This includes revision of all learned material, advanced troubleshooting, and practical assessments. Successfully passing the trade test is the final step to becoming a qualified diesel mechanic.

Training Venue

The institutional training for this apprenticeship will take place at Try Easy Electrical Solutions, located at Unit 3, 181 Immelman Road, Wadeville, Johannesburg, Gauteng Province. It is important for applicants to be aware that they must be willing to relocate to Gauteng for the duration of the institutional training phase. This ensures consistent access to the training facilities and instructors.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for the Diesel Mechanic Apprenticeship Programme, applicants must meet specific criteria. They must be South African citizens between the ages of 18 and 33 years old and currently unemployed. A crucial academic requirement is an N2 qualification or higher in Diesel Mechanic, Mechanical Engineering, Motor Mechanics, or related engineering studies. Additionally, applicants must have successfully passed Mathematics and either Engineering Science or Physical Science.

Preference Will Be Given To

While meeting the minimum requirements is essential, TARDI also gives preference to certain groups. Youth from the Eastern Cape Province, graduates from TVET Colleges, female applicants, and individuals living with disabilities are particularly encouraged to apply. These preferences aim to promote inclusivity and address specific developmental needs within these demographics.

Ideal Candidate Profile

Beyond the formal requirements, TARDI looks for candidates who demonstrate a genuine passion for diesel mechanics. A strong technical aptitude, coupled with good problem-solving skills, is highly valued. The ideal candidate will be disciplined, professional, and capable of working effectively both independently and as part of a team. A willingness to work in industrial environments and a readiness to relocate and complete the entire program are also key attributes.

Required Documents

Prospective apprentices must submit a comprehensive application package. This includes a detailed CV, a certified copy of their South African ID, and an affidavit confirming their unemployment status. Certified copies of all relevant qualifications and academic transcripts are also necessary. Applicants should also provide proof of residence, a motivational letter explaining their interest in the program, and proof of disability if applicable. A driver’s license, if available, and any additional supporting certificates can further strengthen an application. Incomplete applications are unlikely to be considered.
