The Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) is offering a valuable opportunity for South African students to fund their higher education through the IDC External Bursary Scheme for the 2027 academic year. This bursary aims to support academically strong students who face financial challenges and are pursuing full-time studies at public universities or universities of technology. The application period opens on June 1, 2026, and closes on September 30, 2026.

Understanding the IDC External Bursary Scheme

The IDC External Bursary Scheme is designed to invest in the future of South Africa by supporting students in critical fields. It is open to South African citizens aged 26 or younger who are unemployed and demonstrate financial need. The bursary covers a range of study-related expenses, making higher education more accessible.

What the Bursary Covers

Successful applicants can expect financial support for several key expenses. This includes full tuition fees, university accommodation, and accredited off-campus housing. The bursary also provides a once-off laptop, a meal allowance, and a transport allowance, along with other approved study-related costs. The exact package is detailed in the bursary agreement.

Law and Education Fields

Students in specific law and education programs may also qualify. This includes BCom Law specializing in Commercial Law, Bachelor of Laws, Diploma in Law Studies, and Education. It is important to confirm that the exact qualification is listed by the IDC.

Honours Programmes

While primarily for undergraduate studies, the IDC bursary offers limited funding for selected Honours programmes. These postgraduate fields include Postgraduate Law qualifications, Mathematics, Statistics, Actuarial Science, and Accounting CTA.

Eligibility Requirements

To be considered for the IDC External Bursary, applicants must meet several general criteria. They must be South African citizens, 26 years old or younger, and currently unemployed. A demonstrated financial need is essential, and applicants must be studying or planning to study full-time at a South African public university or university of technology. The chosen qualification must also be on the IDC’s approved list. Generally, the bursary supports a first undergraduate qualification, with specific exceptions for approved Honours programmes.

First Qualification Rule

The bursary typically supports students pursuing their first undergraduate degree. It does not usually fund a second undergraduate qualification or unapproved postgraduate studies. The exception is for specific Honours programmes in Law, Accounting, Actuarial Science, Mathematics, and Statistics.

Household Income Thresholds

The bursary targets students from lower to middle-income households. The primary threshold is a combined household income of up to R350,000 per year. However, applicants with a household income between R350,000 and R600,000 per year may also be considered after an affordability assessment. Accurate disclosure of all household income sources is required.

Academic Requirements

For current Matric learners, strong academic performance is key, with a preference for those achieving a minimum of 75% and meeting university admission requirements. They need to submit Grade 11 and June 2026 results. Current university students must maintain a minimum average of 65% in their latest academic results and show satisfactory academic progress. A minimum GPA of 60% must be maintained throughout the funded program.

Applicants Receiving Preference

The selection process may give preference to students with disabilities, those from Quintile 1, 2, and 3 public schools, students from previously disadvantaged communities, and those from rural areas. Academically strong students and those with significant financial need may also receive preference.

Required Supporting Documents

All applicants must submit a comprehensive set of documents. These include a certified South African identity document, 2026 mid-year or first-semester results, and the latest academic results if not currently studying. A Matric certificate, if applicable, and Grade 11 and June 2026 results for current Matric learners are also needed. Proof of admission or application to an eligible institution, proof of household income, and certified identity documents for parents or guardians are mandatory. A recent proof of residence is also required.

Proof of Household Income

Accurate documentation of household income is critical. This can include certified payslips, bank statements (three months for employed, six for self-employed or unemployed), an affidavit confirming unemployment and income, a SASSA letter for social grants, death certificates, divorce certificates, or sworn statements for separated parents. Documentation for both parents is generally required unless family circumstances prevent it.

Certification Guidelines

All submitted copies must be certified and no older than three months. Ensure the certification stamp is clear, the commissioner’s details are readable, the certification date is present, all pages are clear, and no required documents are missing. Incomplete or expired documents can lead to disqualification.

How to Apply

Applications for the IDC Bursary Programme 2027 must be submitted online through the official IDC bursary portal. Applicants need to register a profile, complete all personal and academic sections accurately, and enter household income details. They must select the correct field of study, upload all required supporting documents, and complete an online interview questionnaire. It is crucial to review the application carefully before submitting it by the closing date of September 30, 2026.

Application Closing Date

The deadline for all applications is Wednesday, September 30, 2026. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered. It is advisable to start the application process early to gather all necessary documents and information.
