The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) seeks applications from enthusiastic and motivated students who are looking to gain professional experience in the fields of water resources management, climate change adaptation, water, energy and food security.
Background
Global Water Partnership (GWP) is an intergovernmental organization established in 1996 to support countries in their efforts to implement more equitable and sustainable management of their water resources. The network spans 13 regions with 2,400 institutional partners in 158 countries. The GWP secretariat is based in Stockholm, Sweden. Global Water Partnership Southern Africa (GWP SA) is one of the 13 regional water partnerships covering the countries of the SADC region.
GWP works with countries to enhance water security and climate-resilient development. GWP interventions address water-related challenges such as drought, floods, food insecurity and climate change, among others, through the application of an Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) approach. Work carried out by GWP SA is structured into three strategic goals:
- Catalyze change in policies and practices
- Generate and communicate knowledge
- Strengthen partnerships
GWP SA is the regional arm of GWP and was launched in June 2000. Over the years, GWP SA has grown rapidly into a regional network of over 350 partner organizations concerned with water resources management. GWP SA partners have formed a number of Country Water Partnerships (CWPs) – 13 out of the 16 Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries now have their own CWP. The GWP Africa Coordination Unit (CU), established in Pretoria, South Africa, and hosted by GWP SA, is the African Continental arm of GWP.
GWP SA/CU has the following portfolio of main programs and projects:
- Africa Water Investment Program (AIP) – a program that has been developed to enhance job creation through investments in water security, industrialization and climate-resilient development.
- Water, Climate and Development Program (WACDEP) – a pan-African program promoting integration of water security and climate resilience into development programs.
- Water-Energy-Food (WEF) Nexus program is currently being implemented in the SADC to establish a regional WEF Nexus Framework that will facilitate investment in the region.
- Transboundary water governance and environmental program is currently being implemented in the SADC region to promote investment-led transboundary management and governance of water and environmental resources.
- The African Cities Program for Integrated Urban Sanitation and Water Management aims to promote integrated urban water and sanitation investment for resilient cities in Africa.
- Climate-resilient Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) program aims to promote climate-resilient WASH services through the provision of a strategic framework, building capacity on WASH and climate-resilient development.
Objectives of the internship
The objectives of the internship are as follows:
- Enhance the educational experience of graduate students/junior experts through practical exposure and involvement in GWP’s programs in the Southern Africa region.
- Provide graduate students/junior experts with exposure to the working environment of an international organization while allowing them to gain a better understanding of GWP’s goals and interventions.
Functions and output expectations
Under the direct supervision of the respective GWP SA Program/Project Leaders, the interns are expected to perform the following tasks:
- Conduct background studies in the thematic priority areas that will be determined jointly by the specific program/project leader (supervisor) and the intern.
- Compile best practices, lessons learned, experiences and stories on key thematic areas of GWP.
- Support project implementation by contributing to specific deliverables as agreed with the program/project leaders.
- Provide support to the meetings, workshops, conferences and trainings organized by GWP SA, where applicable.
- A report in the thematic priority areas that are determined jointly by the supervisor and the intern.
- Comprehensive report on the experiences gained, challenges faced and reflections on areas that need improvement for managing future internships.
The intern will be expected to deliver the following outputs at the end of the internship:
Duration of the internship
The duration for internships will be a maximum of 11 months until December 31, 2019.
Qualifications and experience
Applicants interested in internship opportunities at GWP SA are required to have the following qualifications and experience:
- a bachelor’s degree in areas relevant to the work of GWP SA. A Master of Science degree is an advantage.
- Some general knowledge/understanding of water resources management, water security, climate change, environmental management and related issues.
- Knowledge of English language is essential.
Other relevant information
The interns must keep confidential any and all unpublished information made known during the course of the internship, and not publish any reports or papers on the basis of information obtained except with the written approval and authorization of GWP SA.
