Are you a young South African looking for a hands-on career in mechanics? AFGRI Equipment is offering a significant opportunity with 40 apprenticeship positions for 2026. This program is designed to train aspiring Tractor Mechanics and Earthmoving Mechanics, providing a solid foundation for a successful career in the agricultural and construction sectors. The apprenticeship combines practical experience with formal education, spanning approximately three years.

This program is an excellent way to gain valuable skills and a recognized qualification. You will learn to service and maintain a wide range of equipment, from tractors used in farming to heavy machinery in construction. AFGRI Equipment is committed to developing young talent, and this apprenticeship is a direct pathway to becoming a skilled professional in a high-demand field.

Understanding the AFGRI Apprenticeship Structure

The AFGRI Apprenticeship Programme is structured to provide a well-rounded learning experience. It begins with a six-month probation period. During this time, both AFGRI and the apprentice have the chance to assess if the program is a good long-term fit. Either party can decide to end the apprenticeship during this initial phase.

Following the probation, the formal training begins. This includes attending a practical training institute, engaging in distance learning through accredited colleges, and receiving specialized product training from suppliers and AFGRI experts. Internal technical training programs are also a key component. The training is supported by AgriSETA and merSETA, ensuring quality and industry relevance.

Key Duties and Responsibilities for Apprentices

As an apprentice with AFGRI Equipment, your role will be hands-on and varied. You will be actively involved in the repair and maintenance of various types of equipment. This includes performing mechanical servicing tasks, managing stock control within the workshop, and providing excellent customer service to clients. You will also undertake general workshop duties and participate in technical training activities.

The goal is to expose you to all aspects of equipment maintenance and repair. This comprehensive approach ensures you develop a deep understanding of the machinery and the skills needed to keep it running efficiently. Your contribution will be essential to the smooth operation of the workshop and the satisfaction of AFGRI’s customers.

Essential Requirements for Applicants

To be considered for the AFGRI Apprenticeship Programme, you must meet specific educational and personal criteria. A Grade 12 (Matric) certificate is a mandatory requirement. You must also possess a valid driver’s license, as this is often necessary for practical work and site visits. Strong communication skills are important for interacting with colleagues and customers.

Furthermore, good administrative skills and computer literacy are expected, as you will be involved in record-keeping and using workshop management systems. When it comes to academic subjects, English and Mathematics or Technical Mathematics are required. Please note that Mathematical Literacy is not accepted for this program.

Advantageous Subjects for Your Application

While not strictly required, certain subjects can give your application an edge. These subjects demonstrate a foundational understanding of technical principles that are directly relevant to the apprenticeship. Having passed subjects such as Physical Science, Engineering Science, or Engineering Graphics & Design can be beneficial.

Additionally, if you have taken courses in Diesel Trade Theory or Motor Trade Theory, this would also be advantageous. These subjects indicate a prior interest and aptitude for mechanical work, which AFGRI Equipment values in its apprentices. They suggest you may adapt more quickly to the technical demands of the role.

Required Competencies for Success

Beyond academic qualifications, AFGRI Equipment looks for specific personal attributes in its apprenticeship candidates. A strong motivation to learn and succeed in a mechanical field is paramount. You should demonstrate a keen attention to detail, as precision is critical in equipment repair and maintenance.

Teamwork skills are also highly valued, as you will be working closely with experienced technicians and fellow apprentices. A goal-driven attitude will help you stay focused and achieve the milestones set out in the training program. The ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines is also important, especially in a busy workshop environment.

Important Information About the Apprenticeship

The AFGRI Apprenticeship Programme typically lasts for approximately three years. During this time, apprentices may be required to attend Saturday classes to supplement their learning. It is important to be aware that if you fail any subjects or phases of the training, you will be responsible for repeating them at your own cost.

The apprenticeship contract has a maximum duration of four years. This means that the entire training period, including any necessary repetitions, must be completed within this timeframe. Understanding these conditions is key to successfully completing the program and earning your qualification.
