Are you a young South African ready to start a career in road safety and law enforcement? The Western Cape Government Traffic Officer Bursaries 2026 offer a great chance for Grade 12 graduates to train as traffic officers. This 12-month program provides full-time study and a monthly stipend.

Bursary Overview

The Western Cape Mobility Department runs the Student Cadet Traffic Officer Bursary Programme 2026. It targets South African youth who want to become traffic officers. Successful applicants will earn a Further Education and Training Certificate in Road Traffic Law Enforcement.

The program lasts 12 months and starts on 08 June 2026 at Gene Louw Traffic College in Brackenfell. Trainees receive a monthly stipend of R5 000. After training, they may work at traffic centres across the Western Cape, such as Worcester, Beaufort West, George, and Knysna.

Who Can Apply?

To qualify, you must meet these basic requirements:

  • Hold a Grade 12 certificate.
  • Have a valid Code B driver’s licence (manual transmission).
  • Be physically fit.
  • Have no criminal record.
  • Be under 35 years old.
  • Have no visible tattoos or body piercings, except ear piercings for females.

Shortlisted candidates face extra steps. These include a medical certificate, medical assessments, psychological tests, drug tests, fitness checks, driving tests, written exams, and interviews.

What the Training Covers

The training prepares you for real-world duties. You will learn to enforce road traffic laws and promote safety. It also covers crime prevention and traffic control.

Trainees handle administrative tasks too. Expect shift work, including nights and weekends if needed after training.

Skills You Need

The department looks for certain qualities in applicants. Good communication in at least two official languages is key. You should have strong people skills and handle pressure well.

Confidence and assertiveness help in this role. The ability to work alone or in a team is essential.
