UNISA: (Masters/Doctoral) Student Bursary Application Details 2022-2023
Master’s by dissertation and doctoral study & for experimental research bursary
Please take note of the following criteria for the master’s by dissertation and doctoral study & the experimental research bursary:
- The applicant must have obtained 24 credits for the research proposal module at Unisa (please note that this bursary does not cover the cost of the research proposal module).
- This bursary does not cover the cost of any coursework master’s qualifications.
- A supervisor’s report is required for both first-time bursary applicants and applicants re-applying for the bursary. The report must recommend financial support on the basis of quality submissions in terms of research chapters submitted, data analyses, and so on.
- The applicant must have approval by the Master’s and Doctoral Research Bursary Committee (MDRBC) based on academic progress, standard of work submitted, prioritisation of research fields, innovative specialisations and appropriate methodology.
- Awards are dependent on the availability of funding.
- The closing date for applications is 31 January 2019. No late or incomplete applications will be considered.
- An application for funding should be submitted each year, together with a budget that does not exceed the amount stipulated per year.

Master’s by coursework bursary
The closing date is 31 January 2019. Please note that only online applications will be considered.
You may be eligible for a bursary if you comply with the following criteria:
- You have passed two modules towards a coursework master’s degree.
- You have a report from your supervisor which recommends financial support on the grounds of academic performance in the coursework modules you have already passed.
- You have approval by the Master’s and Doctoral Research Bursary Committee (MDRBC) based on the coursework modules you have already passed and your supervisor’s report.

Commonwealth scholarship for master’s and doctoral students
The closing date is 19 December 2018. The Commonwealth Scholarship for Candidates from Low and Middle Income Commonwealth Countries
The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) is responsible for the nominations of South African applicants for this scholarship.
- All applications must be submitted online via the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission’s online application system.
- The DHET does not require any additional applications to be submitted directly to them. Further details on the selection process will be available on the DHET website soon.

The Embassy of Ireland in South Africa, in partnership with Canon Collins Trust, invites applications for scholarships for postgraduate study in Ireland commencing in September 2022.
Eligibility
- Be a South African citizen holding a South African Permanent Residence Permit
- Have achieved the necessary standard to be accepted onto a postgraduate course at an institute of higher education in Ireland
- Be seeking funding for a full-time postgraduate programme in one of the subject areas listed below
- Be able to take up fellowship in the 2019 / 2020 academic year
- Not have already applied for a course at an institution in Ireland – if you have already been admitted to a university you are not eligible
Please note that applicants already in possession of a master’s degree are not eligible to apply.
