The vision of the School of Nursing as an autonomous internationally recognized institution is to be a center of excellence in nursing education, consultancy, research and community services for developing a human kind holistically to learn to serve in response to challenges at national, regional and global levels.

AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

The development of Human capacity (in Nursing) so as to create a critical mass of nurses endowed with quality scientific base necessary to enable them to be critical thinkers, decision makers, innovative and advocates to handle nursing and health problems throughout a person’s life span through rehabilitation, prevention and/ or minimizing the adverse sequelae of disease to the human body and the promotion of health.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

To effect, advance and realize the above Aims, the School of Nursing will:

  1. Develop a highly qualified group of nurses able to expand frontiers of knowledge in society.
  2. Develop high caliber nurses who will be endowed with knowledge, skills and creativity to act as advocates to individuals, families and the community as a whole.
  3. Formulate an innovative Nursing Curriculum in accordance with identified needs of the country’s philosophy on people, Health and Health care and Higher Education in Tanzania that will be sensitive to people, health and health care issues in the Tanzania community.
  4. Prioritize teaching and research from which will inform and underpin intellectual innovation and change in the profession in Tanzania.
  5. Apply science and technology to daily social-economic development activities, health care and health promotion.
  6. Conduct courses that will address the particular needs and circumstances of the disadvantage and vulnerable and marginalized groups in the Tanzania community i.e children, elderly, women, the disabled and the mentally handicapped.
  7. Collaborate; promote partnership, networking and linkages continuously with Christian Universities and Anglican Universities in particular, and other national and international.

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing
  • Diploma in Nursing (Pre-service)

SONU also co-host the Department of Medical laboratory that offers;

  • Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SCHOOL OF NURSING

The following are additional to the University entrance requirements

Entry Qualification for Bachelor of Science in Nursing;
Advance Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (ACSEE) with three (3) principal passes whereby one must have at least Chemistry “C”, Biology “D” and Physics “E” with a minimum of 6.0 points OR Relevant diploma or Advanced Diploma with an Average of “B” or GPA 3.0

Entry Qualification for Diploma in Nursing and Midwifery
Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE) with four (4) passes of which two (2) “C”passes should be in either Chemistry, Biology and Physics and a “D” in Mathematics. A pass in English is an added advantage

Entry Qualification for Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology
Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE) with five (5) “ D” passes in Chemistry, Biology, Physics , Mathematics and English.
