  • Auto Electrician: Focuses on the maintenance and repair of electrical systems in vehicles and heavy machinery.
  • Boilermaker: Involves the fabrication, assembly, and repair of metal structures and vessels.
  • Diesel Mechanic: Concentrates on the diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of diesel engines and related systems.
  • Fitter: Deals with the assembly, installation, and maintenance of mechanical equipment and machinery.
  • Rigger: Specializes in the safe and efficient moving and securing of heavy loads, often in industrial settings.

Each of these trades requires a specific set of skills and knowledge, and the learnership is structured to provide comprehensive training in the chosen discipline.

Essential Minimum Requirements for Applicants

To be considered for the Seriti Engineering Learnership, candidates must meet a stringent set of academic and personal criteria. A strong foundation in mathematics and science is paramount. Applicants must possess a Grade 12 certificate with Mathematics (not Mathematical Literacy) and Science, achieving a minimum of an ‘E’ symbol. Furthermore, candidates need to have completed two N2 trade-related subjects or hold a minimum N2 qualification that includes four relevant trade-related subjects. A minimum symbol of ‘E’ or 40% is required for these subjects; any subjects with an ‘F’ symbol will not be considered.

Specific Trade Theory Prerequisites

Beyond the general academic requirements, each trade has specific N2 subjects that applicants must have completed. These ensure that learners have the foundational knowledge for their chosen specialization.

  • Auto Electrician: Requires Mathematics, Engineering Science, Industrial Electronics, and Electrical Trade Theory.
  • Boilermaker: Needs Mathematics, Engineering Science, Plating and Structural Steel Drawing, and Plater Trade Theory.
  • Diesel Mechanic: Demands Mathematics, Engineering Science, Engineering Drawing, and either Diesel Trade Theory or Motor Trade Theory.
  • Fitter: Applicants must have studied Mathematics, Engineering Science, Engineering Drawing, and Fitting and Machining Theory.
  • Rigger: Requires Mathematics, Engineering Science, Engineering Drawing, and Mechanotechnology.

Additional Candidate Qualifications

In addition to academic achievements, Seriti looks for candidates who demonstrate specific personal attributes and possess certain practical qualifications. Applicants must be able and willing to undergo psychometric assessments, which help gauge their suitability for the demanding nature of engineering roles. The ability and willingness to work shifts, be on standby, and respond to call-outs when required are essential. Candidates should also be self-starters, innovative, and capable of working under pressure, with the ability to identify faults independently.

Possession of a valid Certificate of Fitness is necessary, and candidates must be able to obtain one. A valid K53 driver’s license is a mandatory requirement, underscoring the need for mobility and independence. Lastly, applicants must have no criminal record, ensuring integrity and trustworthiness within the company. Experience in the mining sector is considered an advantage, though not a strict requirement.

Required Application Documents

Prospective learners must submit a comprehensive application package. This includes a CV in PDF format, along with certified copies of essential documents. These documents are: relevant qualifications, a South African ID document, a valid driver’s license, and proof of residence. It is critical that all certified copies are recent, having been certified within a three-month period prior to application. Applicants must also clearly state which specific trade they are applying for on their application form.

Important Application Notes

When submitting applications, it is recommended to use Google Chrome as the default browser, as this can help prevent issues with document uploads. All required documents—CV, certified qualifications, ID, driver’s license, and proof of residence—must be attached. Preference will be given to applicants from the local host communities, so attaching proof of residence is crucial for these candidates. Seriti adheres to Employment Equity targets in its appointments, ensuring a diverse and representative workforce. Only those candidates who are shortlisted will be contacted for an interview. If no feedback is received within 30 days after the closing date, applicants should assume their application was unsuccessful.
