Are you a qualified seafarer looking for hands-on experience in maritime safety? The SAMSA Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Programme 2026 offers a great chance for unemployed seafarers to gain practical skills. This 24-month program comes from the Department of Transport South Africa and the South African Maritime Safety Authority.

About the SAMSA WIL Programme 2026

The Maritime Training Programme focuses on real-world training in vessel inspection and safety. You will work with mentors on tasks like compliance checks and surveying small vessels. It builds skills for careers in maritime operations across South Africa’s coasts.

Programme Duration and Stipend

The program lasts 24 months on a fixed-term contract. Participants receive a monthly stipend of R10 000. Keep in mind that it does not lead to a permanent job after completion.

Placement Locations

Trainees may work in key coastal areas such as:

  • Richards Bay
  • Durban
  • East London
  • Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth)
  • Mossel Bay

The main base is in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, but placements vary.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Help inspect and survey small vessels.
  • Join training sessions for skill building.
  • Check compliance with safety standards.
  • Take part in safety awareness events.
  • Write reports on inspections.
  • Handle daily tasks under a mentor’s guidance.

Minimum Requirements

To apply, you need:

  • A Certificate of Proficiency (COP), Diploma in Maritime Studies, or similar qualification.
  • BSc in Nautical Science is a plus.
  • Be an unemployed seafarer with maritime training.
  • Age between 18 and 35.
  • Pass maritime medical fitness tests.
  • Know basic safety rules.
  • Have strong communication and writing skills.
  • Be ready to work in ports, coasts, or inland spots.
