The management of the Mkwawa University College of Education (MUCE) has released the minimum entrance requirements for successful admission into the postgraduate (Degree, Ph.D., Masters, Diploma, Certificate, Short Course and Non-Degree) programmes respectively for the 2023/2024 academic year.
Interested Candidate may apply to any of the Mkwawa University College of Education (MUCE) Postgraduate programs (Courses) at any time and be admitted subject to fulfilling MUCE admission entry requirements for the 2023/2024 academic year.

MUCE Postgraduate Admission Entry Requirements 2023/2024.
MUCE offers six postgraduate programmes leading to the award of master degrees and postgraduate diploma. These are: Masters of Science with Education (M.Sc. Education), Masters of Arts with Education (M.A. Education), Master of Science in Mathematical Modelling, Master of Science in Applied Botany, Master of Science in Applied Zoology and Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE).
The Masters of Science with Education programme is intended for graduate science teachers who want to expand scope and depth of their knowledge base in the major areas of natural science and mathematics, and advance ones professional career as a science teacher. In order to cater for the large number of science teachers, the programme is offered in the mode of course-work and dissertation and the duration is two years, on a full time basis and three years on part-time basis. The coursework programme component consists of science discipline-based and education courses. A candidate shall major in only one science (or mathematics) subject.
Master of Science in Mathematical Modelling
The programme intends to create a critical mass of well-educated and competent Mathematics graduates equipped with the necessary knowledge, skills and attitude to address pressing societal problems effectively. Graduates of Master of Science in Mathematical Modelling will have developed skills for modelling of various physical phenomenon and analyzing mathematical models for different phenomenon and hence apply the skills in modelling distinct issues of real world.
Master of Science in Applied Botany and Master of Science in Applied Zoology programmes intend to equip graduates with skills to address pressing societal challenges related to botany, zoology, and associated environment. The graduates will acquire skills on how to address issues related to Biology, Botany, Zoology and related disciplines such as entomology, parasitology, animal science, biotechnology, microbiology, wildlife and conservation, public health and biochemistry depending on one’s field of specialisation. Applicants who lack some prerequisite subjects will be required to undertake recommended courses at undergraduate level. This will be determined upon inspection of the candidate’s previous training and experience.
The Masters of Arts with Education is designed to prepare a person who wishes to pursue advanced professional development in the content and pedagogy of Geography (e.g. a teacher in Geography, a community-based specialist, curriculum consultant or advocate in Geographical issues). For individuals who wish to continue working in teaching profession, this programme provides a basis through which a graduate will become a qualified teacher in both content and pedagogy. The programme is intended for Geography educators who want to further develop subject mastery and pedagogical, scholarly, research and leadership abilities through in-depth study in theory and practice.
The Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) which is offered by evening mode is aimed at those who intend to work or are already working within the education sector and wish to join the teaching profession. The programme leads to certification in the teaching profession equivalent to B. Sc. Ed, B.A. Ed. or B.Ed. degrees. The PGDE (Evening) programme in particular will be offered flexibly to individuals who wish to develop a carrier in teaching but are unable to attend a regular similar fulltime programme due to time constraint or work demands. This programme is, therefore, unique in that it makes it possible to combine work and studies.
MUCE Postgraduate Entry Qualifications 2023/2024.
Admission into the postgraduate programmes will be in accordance with the University of Dar es Salaam regulations regarding postgraduate studies. Candidates applying for the MSc. (Ed) programme shall hold BSc. (Ed) or BEd (Science) degrees from a recognized institution. Graduates from non-education science degree programmes, or equivalent qualifications, will be required to undertake postgraduate diploma in Education as a prerequisite programme prior to admission into the MSc. (Ed) programme.
- Master of Science with Education (MSc. Ed.)
This is a 24-months programme and applicants are required to have the following qualifications:
- At least a Second Class degree with a GPA not less than 2.7 from a recognised institution of higher learning. Candidates who hold an unclassified degree (e.g. M.D) shall have at least a B grade in the subject of the intended study (Biology or Chemistry);
- Candidate with a pass degree may also be considered for admission if:
(a) Their undergraduate performance in the proposed subject of study was a B grade or higher,
(b) They have satisfied the University regarding their academic potential through subsequent research experience and/or additional training.
iii. Candidate with a coursework average of B+ or higher in a relevant postgraduate diploma may upgrade to registration for a dissertation leading to a relevant Master’s Degree; and
- Holders of BSc. (Ed.) or BEd (Science) degrees from a recognised institution. Graduates from non-education science degree programmes or equivalent qualifications will be required to undertake Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) programme as a prerequisite prior to admission into the MSc. (Ed.) programme
- Master of Science in Applied Zoology and Master of Science in Applied Botany
MUCE offers a Master of Science in Applied Zoology and Master of Science in Applied Botany by Thesis. The registration period for the programme is normally for 24 months for full-time students up to 48 months for part-time students (This period includes the six months period given for registration). Registration for the programme is at any time during the Academic Year. Only candidates with GPA of 3.5 or above in their first degrees are considered for Masters by thesis.

2.1 Master of Science in Applied Zoology
This programme has two streams namely; Applied Entomology and Parasitology and Applied Physiology. A candidate for admission into the Master’s Degree programme shall hold the following qualifications:
- At least an Upper Second Class degree in the relevant field from a recognized and respected institution of higher learning. Candidates who hold an unclassified degree (e.g. M.D) shall have at least a B grade in the subject of the intended Masters study.
- Applicants to MSc. (Applied Zoology) programme will be required to have at least a first degree in Biology, Zoology and related disciplines such as Veterinary Medicine, Animal Science, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Public Health and Biochemistry.
iii. Applicants who lack some prerequisite subjects will be required to undertake recommended courses at the undergraduate level. This will be determined upon inspection of the candidate’s previous training and experience.
2.2 Master of Science in Applied Botany
A candidate for admission into this programme shall hold the following qualifications:
- At least an Upper Second Class degree in the relevant field from a recognized and respected institution of higher learning. Candidates who hold an unclassified degree (e.g. M.D) shall have at least a B grade in the subject of the intended Masters study.
- Applicants to MSc. (Applied Botany) programme will be required to have at least a first degree in Biology, Botany and related disciplines such as Biotechnology, Microbiology and Biochemistry. Applicants who lack some prerequisite subjects will be required to undertake recommended courses at undergraduate level. This will be determined upon inspection of the candidate’s previous training and experience.
- Master of Science in Mathematical Modelling
This is a 24-months programme and applicants are required to have the following qualifications:
- At least a Second Class degree with a GPA not less than 2.7 from a recognised institution of higher learning.
- Candidate with a pass degree may also be considered for admission if:
(a) Their undergraduate performance in the proposed subject of study was a B grade or higher,
(b) They have satisfied the University regarding their academic potential through subsequent research experience and/or additional training.
iii. Candidate with a coursework average of B+ or higher in a relevant postgraduate diploma may upgrade to registration for a dissertation leading to a relevant Master’s Degree; and
- Holders of BSc. (Ed.) or BEd. (Science) degrees from a recognised institution, with a good background in mathematics.
- Master of Arts with Education (MA. Ed.)
This is a 24-months programme and applicants are required to have the following qualifications:
- First degree in education [e.g. B.A (Ed.), B.Ed. (Arts) or BSc. (Ed) degrees] from any recognised University with at least a lower second of GPA of not less than 2.7 or its equivalent. One has to have studied Geography in the undergraduate degree.
OR
ii First degree in BA (Geography and Environmental Studies) and others of that trend plus a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) from any recognised institution with at least an average pass of B in their final University Examination.
- Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE)
Applicants should have ANY of the following qualifications:
- Advanced Diploma with Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (ACSEE) qualification,
- Bachelor’s degree in any field other than education with an overall G.P.A. of not less than 2.7 or its equivalent,
iii. Higher degree in any field other than education with an overall G.P.A of not less than 2.7 or its equivalent.

MUCE Postgraduate Programmes Bursaries and Fees.
- Application fee
Applicants will be required to pay a non-refundable fee as follows: TZS 50,000/= FOR Tanzanian applicants and USD 50 for Non-Tanzanian applicants.
- Tuition fee
The standard University of Dar es Salaam fee structure will apply for both Tanzanians and Non-Tanzanians, as follows:
- Tuition fee for all MSc. programmes is TZS 4,250,000.00 for Tanzanians and USD 6,150.00 for Non-Tanzanians,
- Tuition fee for the MA. Ed. programme is TZS 4,000,000.00 for Tanzanians and USD 6,150.00 for Non-Tanzanians,
iii. Tuition fee for the PGDE programme is TZS 2,600,000.00 for Tanzanians and USD 3,075.00 for Non-Tanzanians.
- Mode of payment
All payments are paid through bank accounts or mobile money using control numbers. The application fee is paid before submitting the application and other payments are paid after receiving the admission letter.
