Programme Overview

The City’s Academy for Chartered Accountant Training Programme, housed within the Group Governance Department, is a three-year initiative. It offers trainee accountants a position with a basic salary of R35,043.67 plus benefits. The training takes place at 33 Hoofd Street, 6th Floor, Braampark Forum 1, Braamfontein, Johannesburg. This program is structured to align with the training regulations set by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA).

What You Will Learn

The three-year training program is carefully structured to expose trainee accountants to essential areas of professional development. Participants will gain knowledge in professional values and attitudes, business acumen, and accounting principles. The curriculum also covers financial reporting, governance, business and financial strategy, internal audit, and risk management. Minimum Requirements for Applicants

To be considered for the City of Johannesburg Chartered Accountant Training Programme, applicants must meet specific criteria. A Grade 12 qualification at NQF Level 4 is essential. Candidates must have completed a Certificate in Theory of Accounting (CTA) or a Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting (PGDA), both endorsed by SAICA. The qualification must also serve as a prerequisite for admission to the SAICA Initial Assessment of Competence (IAC). Applicants should have zero to one year of working experience. Furthermore, candidates currently registered under a SAICA training contract who have successfully passed the SAICA IAC and are within their first year of the contract are also eligible. Preference will be given to residents of Johannesburg.

Who Should Not Apply

Certain candidates are not eligible to apply for this training program. Those currently completing their CTA, CTA Level 1, or a BCTA (Bridging Course into CTA) should refrain from applying. The program is specifically designed for individuals who have already met the foundational academic requirements for SAICA’s professional qualification.

Primary Role of Trainee Accountants

Trainee accountants in this program will be developed to think critically and use integrated approaches to analyze financial and non-financial information. This skill set is crucial for supporting informed decision-making and contributing effectively to the City, the broader economy, and society. During their training, participants will be nurtured to become ethical leaders capable of creating sustainable value for stakeholders. Good computer skills, including proficiency in MS Office, are necessary. Project management capabilities, time management, and multi-tasking skills, along with a keen attention to detail, will be beneficial for success in this role.
