Who Can Apply?

To be considered for the Capitec External Bursary, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a South African citizen.
  • Be a 2026 Matric student, a student on a gap year after completing Matric in 2025, or currently registered for full-time studies.
  • Be registered or planning to register for full-time studies in 2027.
  • Be studying at a DHET or CHE registered tertiary institution.
  • Be pursuing an NQF Level 7 or higher qualification, such as a Bachelor’s Degree or Honours qualification.

Academic Requirements

  • Grade 12 applicants: Must have achieved a Bachelor’s Pass with a minimum academic average of 65% or above.
  • Tertiary-level applicants: Must have maintained an academic average of 65% or above for the latest full academic years completed, including results from 2025 and 2026.

Who Cannot Apply?

This bursary is not open to students pursuing the following qualification levels:

  • N4, N5, N6
  • Higher Certificate
  • Diploma
  • Advanced Diploma
  • Master’s Degree
  • Doctoral Degree

Additionally, students enrolled at the following institutions are not eligible:

  • TVET Colleges
  • Community Colleges
  • Graduate Schools
  • Business Schools
  • Distance-learning institutions like UNISA

Preference Criteria

Capitec may give preference to candidates who align with the company’s transformation and employment equity goals. Applicants who are on track to complete their qualification within the standard timeframe and are not on N+1 or higher study progression may also be favoured.

Bursary Renewal Conditions

The bursary is renewable each year, subject to the recipient’s academic performance, engagement with development opportunities, and the availability of sponsor budgets. Receiving the bursary in the first year does not guarantee funding for the entire duration of study.

Work-Back Obligation

Successful bursary recipients are required to complete a work-back period for every year of funding received from Capitec. Failure to fulfil this obligation may result in the recipient needing to refund the value of the bursary benefits, plus interest at the prime rate.

Disclosure Requirements

All applicants and bursary recipients must provide accurate and truthful information. If it is discovered that a student is not studying full-time or has undisclosed paid employment, their bursary offer or contract may be terminated. They may also be required to refund all bursary benefits paid. This rule also applies to any false statements made during the application, interviews, or after the bursary has been awarded.
