The Artscape Theatre Centre is providing a valuable opportunity for recent graduates to gain practical experience through its Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP). This internship focuses on plumbing maintenance and repairs within the renowned Western Cape arts venue. About the EPWP Intern Plumber Role

This internship is part of a broader initiative by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) to offer work experience to graduates. The successful candidate will join Artscape’s Maintenance Department, specifically supporting the plumbing sub-section. This hands-on role is designed to equip the intern with essential skills and knowledge in a professional setting.

The position offers a stipend of R243 per day and is a contract role lasting approximately eight months. The intern will report to the Director Operations or the designated Plumber, receiving direct guidance and mentorship. The primary goal is to assist with the upkeep and repair of all plumbing systems throughout the Artscape buildings, ensuring everything functions correctly and safely.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

The EPWP Intern Plumber will be involved in a range of tasks critical to maintaining the theatre’s infrastructure. This includes actively assisting with both routine preventative maintenance and necessary repairs on all plumbing systems. A significant part of the role involves ensuring all work adheres to the Occupational Health and Safety Act, relevant Plumbing Regulations, and other applicable legislation. The intern will work alongside experienced plumbers to help maintain Artscape’s infrastructure, aiming for optimal availability at all times.

Educational and Experience Requirements

To be considered for this internship, applicants must meet specific educational and experience criteria. A minimum qualification of N3 or Grade 12 is required, along with a completed recognized Diploma or Degree. Applicants must also submit their statement of results. Crucially, a certified Red Seal Plumber Artisan qualification is a mandatory requirement. A Grade 12 Certificate is also needed, alongside a working knowledge of plumbing regulations, equipment, and tools.

Additional Requirements for Applicants

Beyond formal qualifications, Artscape seeks candidates who demonstrate a proactive approach and strong problem-solving skills. The ability to work effectively within a team and under supervision is essential. Applicants must be prepared to work overtime, including call-outs during weekends, public holidays, and evening productions when needed. The role requires the candidate to reside in the Western Cape, and proof of address will be necessary.

Candidates must be between 18 and 35 years old and articulate in at least two of the predominant languages of the Western Cape: English, Afrikaans, or IsiXhosa. As a South African citizen, applicants must not have any criminal convictions or pending cases. A positive attitude, a willingness to learn, and strong written communication skills in English are highly valued. The internship also calls for creative thinking, excellent interpersonal skills, and robust time management, planning, and organizational abilities.
